FOUND OBJECT
digital video, stop-motion technique
2min19sec
I had been exploring stop-motion animation prior to creating this video. I enjoy making animated pieces and wanted to make at least one for this body of work, but I knew that doing so would occupy quite a bit of my time.
I decided to use myself in this piece rather than a maquette or hand-drawn sketches. This decision came together very well within the context of the video.
I created a short story of myself in isolation, discovering a strange reflection of my own face – a scene that could perhaps be playing out within my own mind.
My curiosity over this found object begins to consume me: an idea that is frightening at first, but soon evolves into something interesting that I would like to catalyze.
When I construct my videos and animated pieces I am most comfortable with choosing music first and creating the action around that. I decided to create this piece with no music in mind, and instead requested that a fellow student compose music to fit the piece. Rick Salonen, a graduate student, provided the music for this piece. I have also put an open invitation, via internet, out to others to create music for this short. These other versions will be added here as they come to me.
